Kuala Lumpur

Fondly known as KL, Kuala Lumpur’s marketing slogan to promote their tourism industry is “Truly Asia”. As many travelers observed, it is a capital Malaysian city which seems to aspire to become something like Singapore, but has more of a Bangkok feel to it.

The meaning of the Malay name Kuala Lumpur is ‘muddy estuary’ and it has grown from a sleepy Chinese village which has a main means of living mining tin – to the bustling metropolis that it is today.

Getting to Know the Districts of Kuala Lumpur

Even if you spend an entire week’s worth of vacation time in Kuala Lumpur, you cannot exhaust the travel opportunities that it offers, seeing as how huge it is as a city. The sprawling metropolis is divided into several districts. First, there’s the traditional Kuala Lumpur center which is home to the former colonial administrative center. It’s also where KL’s Chinatown can be found, so you’ll have plenty of travel and dining opportunities.

Second, there’s the oh-so-dazzling location of the Petronas Twin Towers which is the Golden Triangle. In addition to the towering skyscraper, the Golden Triangle is also a location of Malaysia’s premier party spots.

Another shopping district is the Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the most popular landmark of which are the Putra World Trade Center. Food lovers would have a blast exploring the Little India of Malaysia in Brickfields which is located south of the city center. Here is where you will find saree shops and banana leaf rice restaurants. Bangsar and Midvalley is located south of the city and it’s also a popular shopping district. Finally, there’s Damansara and Hartamas, a largely suburban district; the northern and southern suburbs and Ampang which is home to KL’s Little Korea.

A Multitude of Traveling Opportunities Offered by the City

Now that you’ve already been introduced to the different districts which make up Kuala Lumpur, what else is there to know about the city? With more than half a million inhabitants in the city proper alone, there’s no doubt that Malaysia in general and Kuala Lumpur are continuing to grow as a developing nation in Asia.

Those who are looking for family-oriented activities in Kuala Lumpur should give the KL Bird Park a visit. The Golden Triangle area is a must-visit for first timers because this is where the Petronas Twin Towers, the Kuala Lumpur City Center and the Menara KL Tower are all located.

The climate in Kuala Lumpur is consistently warm during the daytime, while afternoons and evenings are a bit balmy. Other must-do activities for tourists include a private tour of the Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary, a revolving restaurant day tour or a Central Market night tour.

The Petronas Twin Towers is a great first step that the Malaysian government took to capture the attention of the rest of the world. With plenty of shopping and sightseeing opportunities, there’s no doubt that the city is shaping up to be one of the marvels of the modern world.
